The results are in for the Wilmington Tri-Span Road Race. Grae and I ran the 10K and Caroline ran the 5K race. It was setup almost exactly like last year where both races started at the same time and the 5K racers turned around at the first bridge and the 10K racers headed over the first of 3 bridges.
This race was very hot and humid. The race course offers very little shade and nice blacktop roads to run on. I think we were all sweating before we even began the race. There were a couple issues with the organization. They ran out of shirts and also ran out of wet towels at the end.
It was a tough race, but when you finish the tough ones, you feel much better about yourself. Even with the heat and humidity, Caroline made her PR for a 5K. It must be because of her determination and all of that derby practicing.
I finished with a time of 59:04
Caroline finished with her PR of 35:29
Just signed up Caroline and I for the Wilmington Tri-Span Race. Caroline is signed up for the 5K and I am signed up for the 10K race. We both did this race last year and had a lot of fun with it. This race is pretty flat except for when you are crossing the bridges. I also remember it being pretty hot with little or no shade. A good chunk of the race goes around the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. The 5K racers just stay in the downtown area. They run up to the first bridge and turn around at that point where as the 10K runners run over the bridge.
Caroline and I are both looking forward to the race, but also looking forward to going to the beach. It will be our first trip this season. Grae is also planning on running the race and hanging out at the beach. It should make for a fun 4th of July Weekend.
Caroline and I woke up early for the
The race started and with so many people there it took about 3 and a half minutes to cross the start line after the official start. Grae and I walked up to the start line and then took off running when our timing chips hit the start line. Grae took the high road (sidewalk) at the beginning and I tried to weave through the crowd. It was pretty fun and really cool to see so many people out running. I think that there was 22,000 people out there. I’m not sure if that was a number for all of the different races or just the competitive.
I finished the race with a time of 27:28 and Caroline finished the race with a time of 37:22
This is the first 5K race that Caroline finished the entire race running. She didn’t take any walking breaks. She really felt great and knew she has improved over the past year. Her time last year was 38:18 She almost knocked a full minute off her time!
The race really got us of to a great start that turned out to be a pretty long day. The Carolina Roller derby championship bout was that night and Caroline worked most of the day getting ready for it, working in it and partying after it.
I signed up for the Komen NC Race for the Cure today. Caroline and I did this race last year and we ended up having a lot of fun. Last year I was amazed at how many people turn out for this race and how cool Hillsboro Street looks full of people. I almost forgot about signing up for this race, but Grae reminded me of it.
This race is Saturday June 9th at Meredith College. The competitive 5K race is at 7:15 am. This is actually a good time since later on in the morning there are many more people there for the other festivities. Last year we ran, checked out all the booths and left before the big crowd arrived.
This should be a fun race and a good start to my Saturday. Later on in the day I’ll be enjoying myself at the Carolina Roller Derby Bout Caroline may actually be playing in this bout and I’m excited to see her. Also there will be an after party to celebrate the win (do they ever lose?)
Looks like there is a 5K race right around the corner from me. I haven’t signed up yet, but will ride out there tomorrow morning to see if I can still get in. I did accidentally sign up for the 1 mile race. I’m not sure how I screwed that up.
The Cary Road Race was last weekend and it was a pretty good race. I ran the 10K with Grae and Ron. Charlie ran the 5K and it appears that both races were marked short. I think a lot of people think the got a new PR from this race and I’m not sure if they will find out how short it was.
I think the racers turned around at Kendleton Pl and according to the race map, we should have gone past that street a ways.
The results are up and I got a 52:36.
Signed up for the Cary Road Race on April 14th. I’m going to run in the 10K, but a 5K and 1 mile fun run are also options for this race.
Yesterday I had a great practice run and I’d like to thank the weather for it. The temperature and humidity were perfect. I went 9 miles and didn’t feel any fatigue. Also I managed to get lost in the neighborhoods. What was supposed to be a 6 mile training run turned out to be a 9 miler. For some reason when your lost you think more of where you are and where you need to go than about running. So, I hope this cool, dry weather will stick around for a few more days and I’ll keep plugging along on the runs.
I had fun running in this race, but I’d have to say that this was the hardest 5K I’ve been in yet. This course had a bunch of hills. The race starts off going down a hill and my only thought at the time was that I’d eventually have to come back up the hill to get to the finish. There was also a long hill just before the midpoint of the race. The race was also later in the morning and the temp was already much warmer than last week. It was pretty hot in the sun.
The last mile of the race was pretty much uphill and sunny. It was tough to fight through, but a good feeling to finish. I grabbed a water at the end and headed for the my car for the cool down walk.
Heading out Saturday morning for another 5K:
Now in its second year, this race is held to raise funds for Marshall Taylor, a fourth-grade student at St. Timothy’s in need of a kidney transplant.
Last year over 600 runners participated. The overall winner was Derek Fenton (16:07). The top female was Kristen Cheman (20:03).
Oh man it was cold. It’s the first race that I’ve run in with jogging pants and sweatshirt. I really can’t complain because I got my best 5K time at this race. My time was 27:06 with 8:44 minute miles. That beats my previous best time of 27:15 at the Apex Turkey Trot.
I’m really having some fun with these 5K races. I enjoyed the beginning of the St. Pattie’s day parade because I got to see Caroline skating with the other Carolina Rollergirls. Grae found us a green beer to drink while watching the parade. — What more could you ask for for post race fun?
